A Handful of Interesting Facts about the Film Saving Private Ryan

Darwin Horan

The president of Ventana Capital, Inc., Darwin Horan has overseen the entitlement of more than 35,000 lots and managed the construction of more than 15,000 single-family homes. Outside of work, Darwin Horan enjoys watching films and considers Saving Private Ryan one of his favorites. In the film, Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, takes his soldiers behind enemy lines to rescue Private James Ryan, who has already lost three brothers to the war.

Although some have supposed that the film is based on the Sullivan brothers, all five of whom were killed while serving in the United States Navy, it is in fact based on the Niland brothers, one of whom was returned to the U.S. during World War II after the other three were pronounced dead. However, one of the brothers presumed dead was later found alive in Burma after he escaped a Japanese prison camp.
The main squad of actors actually went through a 10-day boot camp before filming so that they would have a better idea of what it was like to be a soldier during World War II. The actors experienced simulated combat conditions and underwent tactical training.
Director Steven Spielberg cast Matt Damon as Private Ryan because he wanted an unknown actor with a generic American look. However, Damon had become an overnight sensation before the release of Saving Private Ryan after unexpectedly winning an Oscar for Good Will Hunting.
